Rajinikanth is back as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian in Jailer 2, reuniting with filmmaker Nelson Dilipkumar for a sequel that has turned one of Tamil cinema’s biggest franchises into an even larger theatrical event.
Three years after Jailer transformed a retired prison officer into one of Rajinikanth’s most memorable modern characters, the Superstar has stepped back into the world of Muthuvel Pandian.
Released October 15, 2026, Jailer 2 once again places Rajinikanth at the center of an action-comedy universe where controlled silence can be every bit as threatening as gunfire. Nelson Dilipkumar returns as writer-director, with Anirudh Ravichander once again providing the film’s music and background score.
THE TIGER IS FORCED BACK INTO THE FIGHT
The sequel begins with Muthuvel attempting to live quietly in retirement. That peace does not last.
A dangerous criminal organization places his family and the life he has built under threat, forcing the former jailer back into a world he thought he had left behind. What follows is another larger-than-life collision of organized crime, revenge, dark humor and Rajinikanth’s unmistakable screen presence.
But Jailer 2 is designed as more than a one-man show.
The film expands its universe with an ensemble that includes Vidya Balan, S.J. Suryah, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Ramya Krishnan and Yogi Babu, while Mohanlal and Shivarajkumar return to add to the franchise’s cross-industry star power. Hrithik Roshan also appears as part of the film’s sprawling celebrity lineup.
RAJINIKANTH REMAINS THE EVENT
Critical reaction has varied on the strength of the screenplay, but there is broad agreement on what powers the movie: Rajinikanth.
At 75, the Indian cinema icon continues to make stillness, timing, attitude and presence part of the spectacle. Nelson understands that audiences are not simply arriving for another action film; they are arriving for a Rajinikanth event.
Anirudh Ravichander’s score amplifies that energy, turning entrances, confrontations and callbacks into moments engineered for packed theaters.
AND AUDIENCES ARE SHOWING UP
Commercially, the strategy has worked.
By November 3, Jailer 2 had reached approximately ₹816.9 crore in worldwide gross, including more than ₹541 crore gross from India, according to box-office tracking reported during the film’s twentieth day in theaters. The performance places the sequel among the biggest Tamil-language theatrical successes of 2026.
For Rajinikanth, it is another demonstration of a career that continues to operate on a scale few actors can match.
For Sun Pictures and Nelson Dilipkumar, Jailer 2 proves that the world surrounding Tiger Muthuvel Pandian still has considerable room to expand.
And judging by the film’s closing direction, the Tiger may not be finished yet.
