The fragrance industry is experiencing a shift as extrait de parfum emerges as one of the fastest-growing segments of luxury perfumery. Once considered a niche category reserved for fragrance connoisseurs, these highly concentrated perfumes are attracting a new generation of consumers seeking richer compositions, greater longevity, and a more elevated scent experience.

According to WWD, citing Mintel research, global extrait de parfum launches increased from fewer than 100 in 2020 to more than 600 in 2025. Traditionally formulated with fragrance concentrations beginning around 20%, compared with approximately 15% to 20% for eau de parfum, extraits are becoming increasingly important to brands seeking to differentiate themselves in a competitive beauty market.

Luxury Houses Are Embracing Higher Concentrations

Major fragrance houses and beauty brands, including Chanel, Guerlain, Amouage, BDK Parfums, Victoria Beckham Beauty, and Merit, are expanding their presence in the extrait category. The movement reflects a growing demand for fragrances that offer distinctive character, sophistication, and a more personalized luxury experience.

For fragrance companies, extraits also represent an opportunity to introduce premium products at higher price points while reimagining established collections. However, concentration alone does not guarantee superior performance. Ingredient quality, formulation, and craftsmanship remain essential to creating a fragrance worthy of its luxury positioning.

A New Generation Is Driving Demand

Younger consumers are helping reshape the fragrance market. Mintel research cited by WWD found that 40% of adults ages 18 to 24 were familiar with extraits, compared with just 7% of consumers aged 55 and older. This growing awareness reflects a broader transformation in how consumers discover, evaluate, and invest in personal fragrances.

As luxury perfumery evolves, extrait de parfum represents more than a passing trend. It signals a market increasingly focused on intensity, individuality, and perceived value. For fragrance houses, the challenge will be delivering exceptional scent experiences that justify the premium.
