Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily halted as director Matt Reeves steps away from the film to focus on a family matter. DC Studios confirmed the pause while publicly backing the filmmaker, bringing another unexpected interruption to one of the studio’s most closely watched upcoming releases.
“Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon,” the studio said in its statement. No additional details about Reeves’ family matter have been disclosed, and there has been no indication from the studio that the production stoppage is anything other than temporary.
The pause comes after filming on the Robert Pattinson-led sequel had already begun in London. Pattinson is returning as Bruce Wayne and Batman following his debut in Reeves’ 2022 film The Batman, while Andy Serkis and Colin Farrell are expected back as Alfred Pennyworth and Oswald “Oz” Cobb. Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan are among the notable additions to the expanding cast.
The production interruption adds another chapter to the sequel’s long road to theaters. The Batman Part II has moved through several release dates during its development, with the movie currently scheduled to arrive on February 18, 2028. At this stage, neither DC Studios nor Warner Bros. has announced another postponement connected to Reeves’ temporary absence, leaving the February date in place for now.
Expectations surrounding the sequel remain enormous. Reeves established a darker, detective-driven version of Gotham with The Batman, while the Colin Farrell-led HBO series The Penguin further expanded that universe and kept audiences inside its criminal underworld during the lengthy gap between films. The second movie therefore arrives with the task of continuing a world that has become one of DC’s most distinctive standalone screen franchises.
For the moment, however, the production calendar is secondary. DC Studios has made clear that Reeves has its support, and the lack of further information surrounding the family matter should remain exactly that — private. Gotham may be temporarily quiet, but there is currently no indication that Reeves’ Batman saga has changed course. The Bat-Signal is dimmed for now, not extinguished.
